Brendan Von Briesen

Graduate in History and Politics from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington (USA). Holds a Master’s degree in Economic History and a PhD in Contemporary History from the University of Barcelona (2017). His doctoral thesis focused on the guilds responsible for loading, unloading, and transporting maritime goods in the Port of Barcelona. He received the 23rd Ricart i Giralt Research Prize, awarded by the Maritime Museum of Barcelona and the Ramon Muntaner Institute, for his book on the history of cargo handling in the Port of Tarragona (c.1740–1940). He is a member of the Research Group on Work, Institutions and Gender at the University of Barcelona. He currently works across several areas, including: the history of maritime and port labour; organisations and labour relations within the guild system, particularly regarding the development of class consciousness through stevedores’ guilds; and Latin American political history. His research focuses on organisational strategies during times of conflict and profound social change.
